Softly draped silk fabrics in champagne, dusty rose and taupe for a guide to 16, 19 and 22 momme silk.

16 vs 19 vs 22 Momme Silk

Momme describes silk fabric weight, not a complete quality rating. The traditional measure is the weight in pounds of fabric 45 inches wide and 100 yards long. For otherwise comparable fabrics, higher momme means more weight per unit area.

16 vs 19 vs 22 momme: comparison table

Consideration 16 momme 19 momme 22 momme
Relative weight Lighter Medium Heavier
Typical feel Airier, lighter folds A balance of lightness and body More substantial drape
Who might prefer it? Those seeking light sleepwear Those seeking an everyday starting point Those preferring a weightier fabric
Coverage Check pale shades in particular Check color and weave Greater weight does not guarantee opacity

These are general comparisons, not specifications for every LOEL garment. Color, weave, finish, cut and room temperature also affect comfort and coverage.

Which should you choose?

Start with 16 momme if a light feel matters most. Consider 19 momme if you want a middle-ground option. Consider 22 momme if you enjoy more body and drape. None is automatically the right choice for a season: a loose-fitting heavier set may feel different from a close-fitting lighter one.

Check the actual product's composition, measurements, care instructions and available weight before buying. A whole pajama set's weight also depends on size, style and trims, so it cannot be inferred from momme alone.

Does higher momme mean better silk?

Not necessarily. Fiber composition, weave, finishing and construction matter too. For comparable fabric areas, 22 momme is 37.5% heavier than 16 momme; this does not mean a finished set is 37.5% heavier, warmer or more durable.

Fit and care matter too

Use the individual item's size chart and check whether it gives body or garment measurements. Do not assume a single body-weight range applies across all styles. Machine wash only if the care label allows it; momme alone does not establish washability.

Frequently asked questions

Does mm mean millimeters?

In silk listings, mm is often used as shorthand for momme, not fabric thickness in millimeters. Check the listing if unclear.

Is 22 momme too warm for summer?

Not always. Personal preference, fit, room temperature and fabric construction matter. If you prefer a lighter feel, compare lighter options.

Is 16 momme see-through?

It can be more translucent, especially in pale colors, but weight alone cannot predict coverage. Check product details and photographs.

Which lasts longest?

Weight alone does not guarantee lifespan. Construction, wear and following the care label all matter.

Does momme prove the fabric is real silk?

No. Read the stated fiber composition separately. A weight number is not an authenticity test.
